Long Bio

Layton Hiebert (b. 1999) is a percussionist, composer, arranger, and educator born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. He began playing music at 10 years old, playing drum set in rock bands with friends. As he grew up he became immersed in jazz music, introducing him to a variety of different styles of music and expanding the way he approached playing. This eventually led Layton to pursue a bachelors' degree in classical percussion from the University of Lethbridge with Adam Mason, where he graduated in 2023. Throughout his years at the University of Lethbridge, Layton performed and toured with multiple ensembles, including the jazz ensemble (dir. Josh Davies), the wind orchestra (dir. Chee Meng Low), and the Global Drums percussion ensemble (dir. Adam Mason). In his time with the jazz ensemble Layton performed in Dallas, Texas, at the Jazz Education Network Conference. With the wind orchestra, Layton traveled to Taiwan, performing in Taipei and at National Chiayi University. Layton also won the University of Lethbridge Wind Orchestra Concerto Competition in 2021, leading to his concerto soloist debut performing Toshiro Mayuzumi's xylophone concerto in 2022. Through Adam Mason's internationally recognized Global Drums Ensemble, Layton performed in places such as Honolulu, Hawaii learning world drumming styles such as steel pan, Polynesian toere, Brazilian samba, and Japanese taiko among many other musical styles. Layton was also featured as a soloist with Global Drums multiple times performing ragtime xylophone.

Layton has worked to become a percussion powerhouse, proficient in many styles around the world, and delivers engaging performances across all kinds of venues and genres. Through thoughtful programming and performance, he gives an experience to the audience that blurs lines, pushing the boundaries for percussion performance. Aside from performing, Layton finds another creative outlet through composition and arranging, seen in his work "Deb, You See?" - Claude Debussy's Clair De Lune Reimagined. Layton also values bringing accessibility and education to all things percussion, and has 8 years experience teaching private lessons and giving clinics to multiple schools. Outside of the classical world, Layton also enjoys collaborating with YouTube superstar Joe Porter. Layton has performed with Joe in multiple videos reaching millions of views. Through this, Layton has performed for thousands of people at the Michelob Ultra Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada and has worked professionally with companies such as the Home Depot.
